FIG. 07 — DO NOT TAP THE GLASS
01 · THE BRIEF

The seventh one had to be soft.

Projects one through six were all hardware. Antennas, relays, an engine my superiors would prefer I don't mention. The station hums day and night — a good sound, I tuned it myself — but nothing in it was alive, and somewhere around number six that started to bother me.

So the note on the workbench for number seven just said: something soft this time.

02 · INGREDIENTS

Starlight, mostly.

The suspension is 92% starlight, poured slowly — it clumps if you rush. The other 8% is patience and a stabilizer I'm not proud of. The violet stuff at the bottom is stellar sediment, it settles on its own after a cycle or two and you should not stir it back up. I did, once. Bad week.

The crescent is a lunar fragment, for ballast. A dream needs something heavy nearby or it drifts off. That's the whole recipe, and the name wrote itself: Starlight Seven.

Officially it's an experiment. Unofficially I just wanted it here.

03 · CONTAINMENT NOTES

It is not a cage.

Yes, it's a jar with a lid, I know what it looks like. But the field points outward, it keeps the cold away from the rabbit, not the rabbit in the jar. The vents in the cap are sized for snoring. And the lid opens from the inside, there's a little handle and everything.

It stays because the sediment is warm and the company is decent. I ask at the start of every cycle. So far the answer has been a yawn.
